Plant Protein…So Underrated!

How much do you ACTUALLY need?

Protein is an essential part of anyone's diet as it's something we require in large (macro-nutrient) quantities to survive and thrive.

Without going into too much detail, there are 9 essential amino acids and 12 non-essential.

It is a common misconception that plant-based protein sources lack essential amino acids.

This is false, all plant-based food sources contain a complete essential amino acid profile.

The main role of Protein in the body is to regulate nitrogen levels so you can recover and repair muscle tissue.

Here are some sources of food that can contain high levels of protein:

- Vegetables

- Nuts

- Legumes

- Seitan (Gluten)

- Protein Powder

Although protein recommended daily intake seems to be forever changing, we have found a good rule of thumb of 1g - 2g per kg of body mass.

(This applies to both men & women)

Eg. 70kg Person = 70g - 140g protein / per day

[There is some evidence that for performance, the RDI for protein is 1.62g per kg of body weight]

Protein supplements are a convenient dietary tool to help isolate the macronutrient without many calories from other sources.

In saying this, they are not essential assuming you have a well-planned nutrition plan.

On a final note, protein plays a vital role in satiety.

This means that by consuming enough protein, regulation of hunger will become easier.
